COUNTDOWN

Ever notice yourself thinking that the days are going by so much faster as you’ve grown older? Using the phrase ‘lost track of time’ or ‘I thought it was Friday!’ when its in fact Thursday, perhaps this all comes down to us not REALLY been conscious of each and every day as a new one.

5 4 3 2 1…

It seems as if we are constantly on a countdown. Counting down the days til’ we finish work for the holidays. Counting down the weeks til’ you get to see that special someone. Counting down the time til’ they have to leave again. Counting down til’ the next holiday, birthday, event. So rarely do we seem to appreciate the present, constantly thinking of what’s next.

As mentioned in my previous post, I’m dying to get home for Christmas! But I’m forgetting that it also means I’m leaving other things and people behind. I think it’s definitely a skill that has to be harnessed and developed, being able to truly make the most out of each and every day that is.

But there is one type of countdown that I think helps us to recognise each and every day and use it to it’s fullest. That is, in fact, the Christmas calendar. When we were in school, each and every day we would write down the date neatly in the top right hand of our books. This small act of recognition really helped us to differentiate each and every day.

But when it comes to Christmas, opening a door each morning truly marks the start of that day. Equally, having a treat and the excitement of opening a new small present each morning instantly starts your day on a good and positive note. To some, waking up to their favourite brew of coffee is something they can look forward to on their mornings. Some people also have a calendar on the wall in which they cross off each day. Others make a to-do list each day, writing the date at the top of each page. But don’t forget to include things other than deadlines in your daily to-do list. This could be to ring your mum for half an hour, spend some time talking to your friends, texting a long distance friend or even scheduling to have a nice bath and spend an hour reading.
