I am a self-confessed over packer. There, I said it. When it comes to packing for a summer holiday I usually end up stuffing my suitcase with way more items than I actually need, the reality being I only end up wearing 40% of the clothes I take. Recently though, I have been getting much better at packing for my summer holiday. What with moving houses every year, frequent short trips back home and previously having to share suitcases for family holidays (I know, right!? insane), I’ve started streamlining both my wardrobe and my suitcase, making packing a whole lot easier.
I’ve noticed that when I’m travelling abroad for a vacation/beach holiday, I tend to pack similar variations of the same item each time I travel. So, I’ve listed the top 8 items that I always take on my summer holiday that can see me through both day and night time.
Whether it’s a mini or midi length, a light sundress is an absolute necessity for a summer vacation. I love the 90s, spaghetti strap styles like this one I’m wearing from Urban Outfitters. Otherwise, I’m a sucker for a printed wrap dress, whether it’s classic spots or abstract prints, they can easily transition from day to night by switching up your day bag for a clutch and adding a few accessories.
If you’ve read my double denim post, then you’ll know that prior to L.A I had never owned a denim jacket! When packing to leave, I realised that the one item I was missing was a light jacket that I could throw on top of any look. Thankfully, Melrose Trading Post had an amazing selection of vintage Levi’s jacket that I snapped up on my first day. You can also find smarter denim alternatives, like this one from ASOS, to go with your evening looks.
This summer, the woven straw bag has become of 2018’s biggest trends and they are the perfect arm swag for your next vacation. Not just for the beach, most styles are suitable for everyday use, as well as being large enough to fit a cover-up in. Straw bags, wooden bags, picnic bags, woven bags – the choices here are endless! This is a must-have item for any summer holiday.
I love floaty skirts for something a bit more dressy yet still daywear appropriate. I brought with me two styles from Topshop on this trip, in both a polka dot and striped print, that I wore countless times with a simple black tee or strappy vest. In particular, an asymmetric hem was a huge Spring/Summer trend that makes any outfit look effortless and laidback when paired with some strappy sandals and dressy top.
A pair of stylish, smart sandals is my go-t0 summer shoe as I can wear them from the beach to the bar. Choose a classic style in a simple color, such as black or tan, as these look the most luxurious and go with any outfit. A small heel makes them great for sightseeing in the day and dinner at night, without having to worry about tripping over cobble roads! Don’t pass up on Dune’s offering that are very similar to the much coveted Hermès ones, at a much more affordable price point!
I always cringed a bit at the thought of a cover up, the word bringing to mind those mini kaftan styles with pom poms around the edges in neon colors, which was enough to turn me off! That was until I found some simply gorgeous styles that I’d happily wear day or night, with Tory Burch currently stocking some beautiful options. A cover up doesn’t have to be a dress either, why not look at investing in a large scarf to wrap around your legs or to tie around your top as a halterneck.
I’ve only just started getting in crop tops, after being terrified of showing my stomach area for so long – thank god for high waisted pants! I love wearing crop tops with high waisted skirts, shorts and trousers that hide the tum but show the midriff. There are some really great pieces on the market at the moment as well that include off-the-shoulder puffed sleeves and Victorian-esque ruffles like this Love & Lemons one that looks great with striped shorts.
High Waisted Pants
I love a pair of high waisted, wide leg trousers for a week away in the sunshine. I find vertical stripes to be the most flattering and classic, so I can bring them out again every year. For warmer climates, look for breathable and light materials like Linen, thankfully there is a tonne of amazing options this summer as well! Paperbag waists were also a huge Spring/Summer trend and look great paired with a tucked in vest or crop top.
I don’t usually post more shopping focused posts like this, but I’m wanting to trail a few different pieces of content to see what you guys most like reading! So, let me know in the comments what type of blog posts you like reading. Do you prefer more personal, shopping based or a mix of both?
