BACKWARDS DRESSING

I can appreciate that the title of this piece seems rather dubious, or even quite pessimistic. I promise you that it’s neither of the two. But what happens when you literally take your clothing and wear it back to front?

I can appreciate that the title of this piece seems rather dubious, or even quite pessimistic. I promise you that it’s neither of the two. You might be associating the words backwards with the motion of going back to a starting point. You might have come to that assumption by thinking of what it’s not, it’s certainly not going forward. You might also be thinking of many other meanings depending on the language you and your social group use, but I most certainly am not referring to anything Urban Dictionary defines the word as and nor any of the above.

Anyhoo, without going too far off tangent… I’m quite simply talking about the act of taking a garment, and wearing it backwards. What! I hear you exclaim, how odd, how foolish. If you wear a garment backwards it will simply just look like it’s, backwards. And that’s a valid point you might have, but I think you would be surprised by how many outfits you own in your closet that would actually look equally as brilliant worn the ‘wrong’ way round. I’m sure we can all recall a few occasions where we have stepped out of the house wearing our shirt back to front, to only find out at the end of the day when you’re undressing, in which you laugh in embarrassment and exclaim ‘Oh you wouldn’t BELIEVE it but I was wearing my shirt backwards the ENTIRE day! I hope no one noticed!’.

Would you be surprised if I told you that this lovely sheer shirt I’m wearing here is being worn back to front? Hopefully you didn’t have any idea when you first saw the image and you are now marveling in how tremendous backwards dressing can be! When first starting this blog and articles of musings, I knew that I wanted the focus to revolve around style in a fashion world (hence the name, clever huh). With fashion moving so fast, trends seem to be blurring as they speed past us at a rate so fast that we can barely pin them down.

I was recently reading an article by the lovely Brittany from Style and Wellbeing, in which she discussed whether repeating items on the blog made for a bad blogger. I often find myself feeling this same pressure, the countless times I’ve featured those Whistles boyfriend jeans since I’ve bought them (turns out is only twice, where is this fear coming from!).  But I think we both agree on keeping it REAL, personally I don’t see the problem so long as we are showing how to adapt that piece within different outfits. The definition, I think, of true style. I also just believe that everyone has that ‘uniform’ outfit and look, that is subject to change throughout times, but which becomes a part of us and is our true authentic style for that particular time. Which is why we all love following style blogs, right?

Of course, I don’t mean staying stagnant, I am constantly trying new looks and enjoy the experimentation that can be so freely done in fashion and I want to inspire you guys to try new things too! There should be a good balance between experimentation and editorial looks and the outfits we wear day in day out. After all, turns out the item I was most worried that I was wearing too much I’d only featured twice so far on the blog (Silly).

So when it came to sorting through my closet and finding old pieces that I hadn’t worn in a while. I pondered over whether I could make them feel ‘new’ again by changing things up. I’ve discovered that I prefer showing my collarbone and feel that it suits my face more over high collared shirts. I loved the back of this shirt, and so decided to wear it back

to front to create a more flattering V-neck shape on the front. And I love it! After all, who SAYS which way things have to be worn? (A: no-one. And if it really bothers you, cut off the label so then there really is no indicator that you have to follow to)

What do you guys think? Will you be experimenting with how you wear your clothes and do you mind seeing one item of clothing being featured more than once on blogs? Leave me a comment below!
