I don’t quite know where it came from, but it hit us like a massive snowball to the face. What’s that? It’s the down jacket of course! Or the puffa, shell or padded jacket… whichever you wish to call them, we all know what you’re talking about.
There was a time in which I swore to myself that I would never be seen dead in one of those long black puffa jackets (and there still are those types are jackets out there to burn our eyes), but fast forward to Autumn 2016 and I was literally searching far and wide to get my hands on this sold out H&M jacket.
For me, it started off with Versace’s Spring Summer campaign featuring Gigi Hadid sat in a heap of snow under the gleaming sun, and I was taken back to my high school ski trips wearing ski boots and baggy ski pants, using far too much SPF on my lips because I liked how white it made my lips. Then, I started to learn that it was actually considered ‘cool’ to North Face Jacket’s, confirmed by Leonardo DiCaprio sporting one in this documentary ‘Before The Flood’. Before I knew it, I had thrown all my previous judgements out of the window and found myself checking the H&M website every morning to see if my beloved jacket had been restocked.
I can’t deny that I was partly lured in due to the similarity to Balenciaga’s offering -I mean can you blame me? – but I’ve been telling myself that I need to get a suitable winter coat for a while now. As much as I love my long grey and camel coats and could happily buy them again and again each year, I have come to accept that I do live in one of the coldest climates for the Winter months and truth be told, my brave Northern self has been well and truly pampered by the promise of a cloakroom on a night out down South.
There’s something about the puffa jacket that makes me feel like I’ve embraced a new side of my personality and am trying something new, yet there’s also something that feels so natural about it. I guess that’s the natural conditioning of the fashion industry after all. We slowly get introduced to a new idea that we still think is not considered a good look and “wouldn’t be seen dead wearing that”, til’ before we know it said item is happily sitting in our closet as if the whole thing never needed debating.
Although a trip to the Alps is not booked in the diary for this year, I can argue that the temperatures in the UK at the moment at that of a similar chill.
