I am going dotty for polka dots, and they are EVERYWHERE.
And whilst on the subject of going dotty… you might have noticed that things have been a little quiet over on my little corner of the internet. I have no excuses other than quite simply, life happened. If you’ve been around here for a while, then you might know that I am a now a proud Fashion Journalism graduate.
I did hold the naive impression that once you graduated, you would have all your shit together. Yet I couldn’t feel more in the same place than I was 3 years ago when I began the course. That’s not to say that things haven’t changed (I’ve moved to London, got an adult job !!) or that my course didn’t grow or evolve me – it sure has. More that I’m still just as clueless about many things just like I was before.
Graduating doesn’t mean that a million of jobs have just landed at my feet, begging for me to take them. I mean, that would be bloody brilliant. But I’m still figuring things out, trying to navigate my way through this funny old thing called life and make it as meaningful as possible. The thing about education is that it never stops. Ever. The trouble is when we assume that there is an end to our education, when in fact life is just one huge learning curve and we should never stop seeking to learn new things.
So where does all this come into play with polka dots? Well, my official job title is ‘Runway Trend Analysis’ which essentially means that I get to spend my days looking at the runway shows – both men and womens – and compile together trend reports based on what I’m seeing. Not too shabby huh. Needless to say, my subconscious mind is sending me trend crazy. I don’t like to think of myself as someone who follows the trends, but gah! One moment I’m writing a report on polka dot prints and the next minute I’m wearing a polka dot top, as if I just so happened to pull on any old thing that was hanging in my wardrobe without any conscious thought.
You might have even noticed that polka dots have taken over my Instagram feed all on their
own accord! Safe to say, the obsession is real. There is no doubt that cool, LA brands such as Reformation and Realisation Par have got me craving this print. The print feels timeless, feminine and dare I say, sexy?
We shot these images down a small alley in South Kensington and I so pleased with how they came out! This frilled, maxi dress had me feeling like I was about to start clapping my hands and break into a flamenco dance at any moment, which coming to think of it, is quite how I’d like to spend most days feeling. I paired the dress with my trusty and well-beaten Stan Smiths as I wanted to show you how a dress like this can be appropriate for both day and evening. After all, why save your best til’ Sunday!
