It’s the height of summer and as we approach the summer holidays, it’s time to get those pedicures booked in and the sandals back out the closet. Sandals have a tendency to be known as the ugly-but-practical shoe, consider the rise of the Birkenstock, Teva and god forbid, the croc. But there’s one trend that I never thought would take off in the ugly sandal shoe department for the millennial, and that is – the toe ring.
Toe ring, toe loop, whatever you want to call them they all mean the same thing, that little piece of material that wraps over and hugs your big toe. Because let’s just face it, feet just aren’t pretty. Considering that, we don’t usually want to wear anything that will bring attention to just how ugly and weird our toes are. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on which way you see it), fashion has a tendency to take the ugly and make it lust-worthy. Having us splash our cash and on that one item that we once said, we’ll ‘never be seen dead in’.
Last summer, for SS17, Céline started the movement by creating the most grotesque, but fascinating, sandals that you have ever laid eyes on. They were mismatched (one red and one black) and paired with tights, both sheer and thick, that bunched up around the toe loop (move over socks and sandals). Little did we know how much we would grow to love the shoe and yet again, Phoebe Philo showed us that she knows us better than we know ourselves. In the words of Muicca Prada, ‘I tend to work against my own taste‘.
I really never thought that this was a trend I could get on board with, but thanks for the power of Instagram influence I was soon swayed when I saw how good they looked on Aimee Song. Then, came the endorsement from other fashion bloggers and editors alike and soon, toe ring styles are flying off the shelves!
Topshop has got some amazing options at the moment, including a stunning pair of black and white strappy sandals that I’m eagerly waiting to come back in stock. When I saw these ones from Topshop that I’m wearing in this post, I knew that I had to treat myself to a pair for my holiday to L.A. They are so comfy and I’ve found myself wearing them them alll the time. Many other high street brands have also brought out their own versions that unfortunately, I’ve not been quick enough to get my hands on including Mango and H&M.
So I’ve searched the internet and found some of my favorite styles that are currently available for you to browse belong! Let me know in the comments, is a toe-ring sandal on the top of your wishlist?
